Get Your Pharmacy Back-To-School Ready

August is a busy time of year for most parents and retailers as our communities prepare for back to school. School supply lists are filled with pertinent items, like backpacks, notebooks and pens – but what about a child’s most important need? Back-to-school needs are not limited to school supplies. Your pharmacy provides vital medical needs, such as immunizations and vaccines – and August is the perfect month to promote those services.

These schedules list the age or age range when each vaccine or series of shots is recommended. If a child (birth through 6 years old) or adolescent (age 7 through 18 years old) has missed any shots, consult the catch-up schedule to get them back on track.

Along with scheduled immunizations, August also marks the beginning of cold and flu season. Use or free, editable back to school immunization flier to let your patients know that you are an immunization-certified pharmacist, so skip the doctor's waiting room and office visit charges. You’ve got them covered.

Don’t forget about your front-end products. Items such as lice treatment products, inhalers, Epi pens, first aid kits, hand sanitizer, and cold and allergy medication are typically in high demand at the start of the school year. And if you happen to sell school supplies in your pharmacy, bundle several items together in baskets, create coupons or buy-one-get-one free sales.

Need an idea to get new customers in the door? How about holding a small event, such as a community school supply drive? If you can’t go at it alone, partner with other local independent retailers to cast a wider net.
