| Pharmacy
wins delay
of tamper-resistant prescription pad
requirement! |
You did it!
A big pat on the back and sincere thanks to those
of you who responded to our June 20 PharmPhlash and
contacted your D.C. representatives and senators
about the flawed mandate for all Medicaid prescriptions
to be written on tamper-resistant pads.
Last night the Senate approved a delay until April.
The House approved it earlier, and now it goes to the
president for his signature.
Talk about "down to the wire"--the requirement
was set to go into effect Sunday!
Some background: The Iraq
supplemental appropriations bill included a provision
concerning the use of tamper resistant pads for Medicaid
prescriptions. The law provides that pharmacists will
not be reimbursed unless the prescription is written on
a tamper resistant pad.
Catch 22! The law
does not define a tamper-resistant pad and it does not
require physicians to use tamper-resistant pads. It does
not provide for emergency situations, for example, when
a physician's office is closed.
