Special opportunity & responsibility
to mentor student
interns |
|
We have a wonderful opportunity, and the
corresponding responsibility, to participate in a
recruitment fair at our newest pharmacy college, the
Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy at Texas A&M
Health Science Center in Kingsville.
American Pharmacies has rented an
interview room
Friday, Feb. 1, for any APRx member to
interview first- and second-year student interns to
work in your pharmacies this summer.
This is a fabulous chance for us to
promote independent pharmacy and educate students to the
fact that they don't have to be just another number
at CVS, Walgreens, or Wal-Mart, but in fact have
opportunities beyond salaried indenture.
Contact APRx NOW!
We MUST know ASAP who will participate
in this rare opportunity.
Call 877-634-5445.
An APRx representative will attend a "meet and
greet" Thursday, Jan. 31, to visit with students, and
I'm hoping many of you will attend both Thursday and
again as an interviewer Friday.
Dr. Barry Bleidt, PhD, PharmD, RPh, Professor and
Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, is very
pro-independent pharmacy entrepreneurship. The student
body is 60 percent male and 40 percent
female, 40 percent of whom are Hispanic. A
large portion is from the Rio Grande Valley
and is very interested in independent
ownership.
This is indeed a rare opportunity. Please step
forward to represent indedpendent pharmacy, American
Pharmacies, and your own business.
Stay tuned! |
| APRx GPAC
Advisory Committee to hold first
meeting |
Our 14-member political action
committee advisory board will hold it's first conference
call meeting Tuesday evening, Jan. 29. Our very
effective GPAC historically has been guided by your APRx
board of directors. The board now wants to make our
political action committee even more inclusive.
The main attribute that sets
American Pharmacies apart from other pharmaceutical
buying groups is our political and regulatory
advocacy.
The GPAC Advisory Committee is
comprised of a representative and an alternate in each
of six districts based on state senatorial districts,
plus two at-large board members.
They will help us decide which
candidates to support in the contested races where the
candidates will be in a pivotal position on votes
affecting independent pharmacy.
Down the road, you may hear from
these advisory board members and
alternates soliciting your support and
participating in the GPAC and in political
activities.
A very big thank you to these APRx
leaders for contributing their time:

Balto and Purcell to
testify |
Two experts on pharmacy benefit managers and
contract transparency have accepted our request
to testify at the interim hearing Friday, Feb.
15, before the House Government Reform and Pensions
& Investments committees.
David Balto, a partner with Robins, Kaplan, Miller
& Ciresi LLP in Washington, D.C., testified for
us at a Senate interim hearing, also about pharmacy
benefit managers. He has practiced antitrust
law for more than 20 years both in the Antitrust
Division of the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade
Commission, and private practice.
David counsels a wide variety of health
care companies including pharmaceutical manufacturers,
medical device manufacturers, specialty pharmaceutical
distributors, health care systems, and pharmacy chains.
His counseling includes antitrust and consumer
protection compliance, FDA regulation, strategic
alliances, distribution issues, mergers and joint
ventures. He has testified before Congress and the FTC
on health care competition issues.
Gerry Purcell assists states, cities, and private
plans in selecting and contracting with the best PBM,
negotiating optimal contracts with pharmacies and drug
manufacturers, selecting benefit designs, maximizing
rebate strategies and rebate migration, auditing, and
litigation strategies. He assesses PBM business
practices and the potential financial damages and
overcharges as a result of their practices. He has
evaluated hundreds of plan sponsor agreements, thousands
of pages of PBM documents to include agreements with
drug manufacturers and network pharmacies, and
collaborated with the top PBM consultants and auditors
in the United States for the purpose of developing a
baseline model to determine potential overcharges.
Gerry is frequently asked to testify before
federal and state legislative bodies. He has briefed
Department of Justice attorneys and more than a dozen
attorneys generals on the subject of pharmacy benefits,
and evaluated their respective state programs. He has
worked extensively in support of the multi-state
attorneys generals litigation regarding reimbursement of
Medicaid claims, including Texas.
Gerry's efforts, along with other
full-disclosure advocates, are yielding substantial
savings and recoveries for clients and are beginning to
change PBM practices nationally.
Prior to working in the PBM industry and
forming Pharmacy Partners, Gerry worked in the managed
care industry with Kaiser
Permanente.
