Information exchange adds value to MAD days event and APRx annual meeting

It was great to see all of you who attended the MAD Days of Summer this past weekend, and we missed those of you unable to make the trip. This really is a good conference put on each summer by Morris & Dickson.

Staffing our booth gave us many opportunities to visit current and prospective members about the issues facing community independent pharmacy and the benefits of American Pharmacies membership.

During our APRx Annual Meeting, I went into detail about our exceptional growth this year. I attribute this growth to our Premiere Tier I agreements with Morris & Dickson and AmerisourceBergen, plus a concerted effort by our business development managers, Kaye Stroud and Neal Head. We also had  unprecedented generic rebate percentage growth and generic compliance gains.

The Board has directed us to continue with our strategic plan that is proving so financially successful to our members and to increase APRx membership. Our new VP for Sales and Operations, Laird Leavoy, jumped right in at the first of July with ideas to expand our member services and support our business development manager.

One of Laird's ideas that we're really excited about is acquiring new technology to connect with our wholesale partners. Information gleaned from this technology will give us a snapshot of member buying volumes so we can alert you to the fact that buying just a little more of something could bump you up to a bigger rebate level. That's a win-win-win situation for members, for American Pharmacies, and for our Tier I vendors.

Our VP for Pharmacy Affairs, Richard Beck, RPh, also is the Texas Pharmacy Business Council's executive director. Richard alerted us to the work ahead in the Texas legislature. Getting pharmacy-friendly legislators re-elected is crucial. In particular, we need to have Reps.Chuck Hopson, RPh (R-Jacksonville) and Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles (D-Alice) return to Austin. As you know, Chuck is an independent pharmacist. But did you know that Yvonne's father is an independent pharmacist in Mathis? She authored the crucial legislation calling for regulation of discount cards in the 2009 legislative session, and she can be counted on to continue being a major supporter of all our bills.

It's not news to you that money is tight, and the state is really hurting for revenue. We need to help the state save Medicaid funds,so get ready to augment your pharmacy services with medication therapy management.

Richard also is pushing for a Class A Community Pharmacy Advisory Panel for the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Sure could save a lot of heartburn if we could give feedback during the development stage of various regulations rather than fighting for changes after they're published in the Texas Register.

These are just a few of the points Richard made. Watch for next week's Texas Pharmacy Business Council newsletter for more details.

Continued success,

P.S. Plan ahead to attend next summer's MAD days. It's a great event, and we extend a special thank you to Sandra Minton of Morris & Dickson for all her work on this year's gathering.
