Internship match opportunities
We found a pool of future independent pharmacists at the recruitment fair at our newest pharmacy college, the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy at Texas A&M Health Science Center in Kingsville.

American Pharmacies Directors Buddy de la Rosa from the Valley and Bruce Rogers from Victoria joined me last week to talk with student interns. My wife and I both are graduates of Texas A&M Kingsville, so I was particularly proud to attend this event.

We had some very interesting discussions with young people who stopped by our booth. Many of the first- and second-year students are eager to know more about operating their own pharmacies, especially those from the Valley who had friends and family in the business.

Every chain and most hospital groups were aggressively recruiting at this fair, significantly outnumbering independent pharmacy.

We invited students to visit our Website and send information if they are looking for a summer internship. For those who do, we will contact one of you in their desired area to help connect these interns with our professional members.

To host an intern, a pharmacist must be a preceptor. You can do this through approximately three CEU hours through the various universities--even online. Watch for more on attaining preceptor status.

APRx member and Texas Pharmacy Association President-Elect Bill Moore narrowed his group of students to 11 and is interviewing further to hire three interns, one for each of his stores in the Corpus Christi area.

Dr. Barry Bleidt, PhD, PharmD, RPh, Professor and Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, asked us to line up speakers to talk about the profession of independent pharmacy. Start thinking about this, and let us know your interest.

Stay tuned for more information about more internship matching opportunities and preceptor CEUs.

NOTE: Many of you have asked about Richard since his recent heart bypass surgery. He's home and doing well, and is very appreciative of all the good wishes you sent.

Mail order drugs contribute to teen prescription drug abuse
If you were watching the Super Bowl commercials, you saw the announcement of a White House task force to address the abuse of legitimate prescriptions

While applauding this initiative, the National Community Pharmacists Association points out "one problem associated with abuse of prescription drugs is the routine shipping of 90-day supplies through the mail from facilities owned by pharmacy benefit managers.

"In most parts of the world, a 30-day supply is the norm-also the maximum amount that these same pharmacy benefit managers allow community pharmacies to dispense.

"With so many pills delivered in mailboxes or on front door steps, placed in the medicine cabinet or on the kitchen counter, it is very difficult for consumers to account for every painkiller (Vicodin), sleeping aid (Ambien), or anti-anxiety medication (Valium), increasing the risk for teenagers or other family member to experiment with medications not prescribed for them."

"Medications often are discontinued well before all of the medication has been taken. Even if it is not an 'abusable' drug, the potential for accidental poisoning is always present.

"In addition, disposal of unneeded prescription drugs is a major environmental risk for our waterways and landfills."

Rather than resolving the problem head on, health plans and PBMs contacted by Drug Benefit News say they are working with states to help combat the diversion of prescription drugs, while taking steps of their own to intervene when unusual prescribing patterns are identified. One PBM is dumping the responsibility onto state Rx tracking efforts.
