Choosing best health plan baffling?

Word jumble re health plans
Have decisions surrounding health insurance, health plans, which insurance company to buy from, and health care reform got you scratching your head?
Are the terminology and details overwhelming? Have you ever asked yourself the question "Is there someone who can handle all of this for me so I can get back to running my business?"

The answer to the last question is a resounding "YES!"

In keeping with American Pharmacies' pledge to continuously seek quality vendors to help you run a profitable business, we have found a private purchasing health group cooperative. Just as we have joined together to increase our buying power from wholesale distributors, APRx members have the opportunity to use our buying power to obtain health and related employee benefits.

Each of us individually has very little influence, but united together our purchasing power can bring a greater selection of plans and benefits typically only large employers enjoy.

Advantages of being in a private health group cooperative include:
  • One-stop administrative assistance.
  • Outsource employee benefits - the cooperative becomes an extension of the employer's business acting as your new Employee Benefits Department.
  • Attract and retain employees with a quality benefit package.
  • Staff can join the plan at any time, rather than having to wait for a new plan year.
  • Simplified delivery of full employee benefit suite of offerings.
  • Provides rate stability as a large group - Size matters!
  • Consolidated Billing - employers receive only one bill for all products.
  • Simplified Administration - one source for changes, new hires, terminations, billings, etc.
  • Cobra/State Continuation Administration - notices, collect premiums, record keeping....etc.
  • Premiums are collected and remitted in one collective sum.
This opportunity will be supported solely by active members of business organizations such as APRx. Here is what must happen in order for this program to become a reality for American Pharmacies members.

We must act collectively, NOW!!

The first step is to demonstrate our interest in such a program by completing a short, no-cost survey. Interested American Pharmacies members must complete this survey by June 4. Now, don't think that because June 4 is a month away that you can postpone participating in the survey. Filling out the survey takes less than 10 minutes to save you hours, if not days, of work, not to mention sleepless nights!

Taking the survey does NOT bind you to participating in the health group cooperative. However, if do not to take the survey now, you may not have this option in the future.

I would ask you one question: Has your membership in the American Pharmacies cooperative been a plus to your bottom line? If you answered a resounding YES, then I strongly urge you to immediately act and fill out the survey online at: www.healthcooperative.org. American Pharmacies has been offered an exclusive arrangement with MD Health Group cooperative, but only if you act today by filling out the healthcare cooperative survey by June 4.

Don't delay. Do it today!!!

Continued success,

New diabetes treatment access also path for independent pharmacy reimbursements
DASPA, the Diabetes Accreditation Standards - Practical Applications, is a new program designed specifically to expand access and treatment options for patients while offering community pharmacies a path to reimbursement for diabetes management.

Establishing an accredited diabetes education program through a community pharmacy can be a rewarding venture for the pharmacist, both financially and professionally. DASPA offers community pharmacists training to expand their role into diabetes self-management education/training (DSME/T) to be eligible for payment by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for providing these valuable services to persons with diabetes.

CMS and many other payers only acknowledge programs that are accredited or "site recognized" to bill Part B for DSME/T services. The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), a CMS-approved diabetes education accrediting organization, has teamed with NCPA to bring you the DASPA program.

DASPA is a two part program, one part online and one part live, designed to instruct pharmacists who are not certified diabetes educators (CDE) on how to effectively provide DSME/T, how to establish and manage the business aspects of a successful program, and how to accredit a DSME/T program through AADE.

Please note: The online portion of the DASPA program must be completed PRIOR to attending the live portion of the program.

Section 1: Online
Now available, the online portion of DASPA is a self-paced, 6-module online course that focuses on the essential knowledge and skills needed by community pharmacists who want to enhance their ability to work with patients with diabetes. A comprehensive final exam covering all modules will assess the learner's knowledge.

Online modules include:

    * Defining Diabetes
    * Clinical Practice Guidelines
    * Self-Management Education
    * Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
    * Medications
    * Complications of Uncontrolled Diabetes

Section 2: Live
Live program topics include:

    * Preparing for "site recognition" survey
    * Building the DSME/T team
    * Implementing team-based care services
    * Billing boot camp
    * Appropriate therapeutic shoes/inserts
    * Diabetes education proficiency training session
    * Medical nutrition therapy management
    * Sharing successful business models
    * Establishing a DSME/T program
    * Marketing a DSME/T program in the local community
